Senate Committee Votes to Advance Trump Corporate Insiders to Oversee USPS
Washington, D.C. –Yesterday, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee voted to advance Jeffrey Brodsky and William Gallo to the full Senate floor for a confirmation vote to serve on the Board of Governors to the United States Postal Service. Grassroots members of our coalition sent over 60,000 letters urging the Senate to vote NO on Mr. Brodsky and Mr. Gallo’s confirmation. These nominees do not have a record of public service and they do not reflect the public interests in protecting the public service mission of the Postal Service, instead they come from corporate finance, restructuring, commodities, and dealmaking backgrounds.
The Postal Service must remain public, independent, affordable, universal, and accountable to the people. The Postal Service is a lifeline to rural communities, Tribal and Indigenous communities, seniors, veterans, small businesses, voters with disabilities, military families, caregivers, students, and every household in every ZIP code.
If confirmed, these USPS Board nominees could seek to put in place USPS policies that would disrupt rural mail service and interfere with election mail. “The Board has enormous power. It helps shape service and delivery standards, pricing, election mail policy, and has hire-fire power over the Postmaster General,” says Annie Norman with The Save the Post Office Coalition. “If these nominees are confirmed, the balance of power on the USPS Board will shift dramatically, giving Trump’s pro-privatization and anti-vote by mail allies even more control over the Postal Service.”
The Senate must only confirm nominees to the USPS Board of Governors who will be steadfast in their leadership to take the Postal Service Reform Act as a mandate to protect and expand postal services and bring USPS into the future, and strongly reject and protect against any form of privatization, workforce reductions, or attempts to undermine election mail.
