Washington, DC – At 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14 – the same day the House Financial Services Committee takes up key elements of President Barack Obama’s proposal for financial reform – Celinda Lake of Lake Research Partners will detail the findings of a new poll showing overwhelming support around the country for a new Consumer Financial Protection Agency, which would reign in the kinds of shady practices by banks and credit card companies that led to the economic collapse.

“These results show that the American people understand both who is to blame for the financial collapse and what needs to be done to ensure nothing like this can ever happen again,” said Heather Booth, campaign director of Americans for Financial Reform, which sponsored the poll. “When you buy a microwave oven or a toy for your child, you have the security of knowing that someone has checked to make sure those products are not going to explode in your face. We need the same security when we sign on the bottom line for a loan or a credit card.”
