Senate Must Reconfirm Caroline Crenshaw as SEC Commissioner

WASHINGTON, D.C. – More than 40 organizations, including Public Citizen, Americans for Financial Reform (AFR), and AFL-CIO, have written a letter to the U.S. Senate urging the reconfirmation of Caroline Crenshaw for another term at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The letter, available here, emphasizes that the presence of principled voices such as Crenshaw’s at the SEC is absolutely critical, especially when the incoming Trump administration has signaled its intent to break from the tradition of selecting candidates on a bipartisan basis.

“Caroline Crenshaw represents the best in public service,” reads the letter, adding: “a vote for Commissioner Crenshaw is a vote for average investors and for a functioning, bipartisan, SEC.”

Public Citizen co-president Lisa Gilbert weighed in on what’s at stake: “The SEC has the critical job of regulating company disclosures and Wall Street brokers. The question before us is: Do we really want to risk having an SEC helmed by only one party? Because that’s precisely what we might end up with if Crenshaw doesn’t get another term.”

Americans for Financial Reform Executive Director Lisa Donner emphasized that “Workers, retirees, and investors rely on robust regulatory oversight of financial markets for their economic security and it is vitally important to have SEC commissioners committed to standing up for their interests. Commissioner Crenshaw is an able and dedicated public servant and her voice is urgently needed at the commission.”
