Statement on the Passing of Justice Ginsburg

AFR joins the world in mourning the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a trailblazing jurist whose work contributed immensely to gender equality and to progress towards a more just society.

Among the victories she won as a litigator with the ACLU early in her career was expanding equal access to credit by knocking down barriers that prevented women from getting mortgages, credit cards, and bank accounts on their own. More recently, she stood up for all consumers and workers in her dissent when she called a Supreme Court decision to allow forced arbitration “egregiously wrong.” Throughout her years on the bench, she always remained acutely aware of the vital role the Court plays in how economic power is apportioned and determining whether or not big corporations are held accountable when they break the law. As we carry forward her vision of fairness and equality, we must not forget how crucial the Court is in our pursuit of economic justice for all people.

So much is at stake in the choice of a new Justice, and the citizens of this country deserve to have their voices heard in choosing Justice Ginsburg’s successor. AFR stands with our allies in insisting that choice should be made by the President elected this November.
