Illinois Sheriff Halts Foreclosure Evictions

Cook County Sheriff  Tom Dart announced this morning that he will not go through with mortgage foreclosure evictions by banks that have admitted to “questionable” foreclosure practices: JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and GMAC/Ally Financial.

Sheriff Dart said that he will halt 1,300 foreclosure evictions starting Monday unless lenders can provide an affidavit proving that their foreclosures are legal. His decision stems from the recent admission by banks that their employees signed hundreds of foreclosure documents a day without reading what they were signing or making sure the foreclosures were justified.

This decision by Sheriff Dart comes on the heels of a press conference held by Action Now two weeks ago in which we called on the Sheriff to stop all foreclosure evictions until the banks could prove that they were legal.
Action Now would like to applaud Sheriff Dart’s decision to halt foreclosure evictions, which is a victory for Action Now members and foreclosure victims everywhere!
