―The choice of former Attorney General Richard Cordray to head the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau could add some bite to President Obama’s promise to protect consumers against unscrupulous lenders. That is, unless Senate Republicans pull the agency’s teeth as the price for confirming the President’s nominee. … The bureau has broad public support. According to a poll by Lake Research Partners that was commissioned by AARP, Americans for Financial Reform, and the Center for Responsible Lending, a majority of Republican, Democratic, and Independent voters support the Wall Street reform law and the creation of a single agency, the sole purpose of which is to protect consumers from financial companies.
