Campaign Organizer

Americans for Financial Reform (AFR) is seeking a Campaign Organizer. Join us to help lead the fight against payday lending abuses, and to push back against big bank attacks on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB.)

There is a tremendous opportunity over the next year to win rules that will end the payday lending debt trap.  The CFPB can write a rule that would end abusive payday lending.  The payday lending debt trap currently costs consumers billions of dollars a year; its triple digit interest rates are a shocking instance of the poor paying more; and it further impoverishes economically vulnerable individuals and households. Ending these practices would have a tremendous impact. But the financial industry players who benefit from the status quo – and their friends in Washington – will resist with all their might by attacking both the payday rulemaking directly and the CFPB.

The Campaign Organizer will work with the Payday Lending Reform Campaign Director, the Payday Lending Reform campaign coordinating group, AFR staff and member organizations to design and implement a campaign to secure a strong rule, while defending the CFPB’s authority and independence.

Ideal candidates will have a strong commitment to economic justice, ability to connect with many different constituency groups, and experience working with racially diverse communities; at least 3 years of campaign and/or organizing experience; the ability to drive results and to collaborate effectively with colleagues and allies; experience with grassroots and grasstops campaign strategies and tactics; good advocacy writing skills, and be very well organized and comfortable working in a fast paced and diverse environment. The job offers opportunities for more experienced candidates to take on greater levels of responsibility.

Job responsibilities will include:

  • Managing a field advocacy campaign including: working closely with state and local partners to develop and  implement grassroots and grasstops outreach, public education, mobilization, and advocacy strategies on payday lending abuses, with the support of the national campaign.
  • Tracking  and reporting on grassroots and grasstops activity, and maintaining and building campaign contacts and contact lists
  • Maintaining campaign resources, like payday lending advocacy tool kit, and making sure that state and local partners have the materials they need to succeed.
  • Helping develop and implement, along with the campaign team, state and local communications plans, including use of social media
  • Supporting the Campaign Directors work staffing and coordinating the national coalition.
